Chapter 12

I nudged Dani awake an hour later. She’d somehow managed to fall asleep ten minutes after we’d determined that Emerson wasn’t about to burst into the supply closet and drag us out kicking and screaming. I’d decided to stick around a while longer, just to make sure we were clear. Hopefully, the crew would have shepherded Emerson and his men up to the main deck, and they wouldn’t be able to get back down here without a key.

Dani snorted and wiped at her mouth as she came awake.

“What?” she grumbled, clearly displeased at being woken up.

“I think we’re in the clear,” I told her. “Let’s get out of here.”

She nodded and yawned, and we rose to pull the shelf away from the door. I poked my head outside to make sure we were alone, and then I locked the supply closet up behind us, tucking my ring of stolen keys into my pocket once I’d finished. I’d at least cleaned the blood off the longest one, though there were still a few red flakes caught in the groove.

“Any idea how to get out of here?” Dani asked me.

“I can probably retrace our route,” I said and hoped that was actually true.

At least we were dressed in crew uniforms, though I’d lost my vest, so we didn’t attract any unwanted attention as we made our way through the sharp narrow halls. The chase was chaotic, but I was pretty sure I remembered most of the turns.

There was a group of workers clustered around the fire alarm I’d set off. One of them stood on a step ladder and pulled the casing off to investigate the device’s guts. I pursed my lips and ducked my head as Dani and I pushed past them, hoping none of them would recognize me from that brief moment we’d all been out in the hallway. They let us pass without a problem, luckily, and Dani and I hurried on our way, threading through the hallways one turn at a time.

I managed to find the door to the stairwell and grandly opened it for Dani, trying to pretend like I hadn’t been worried that we would wind up stuck on that level for the rest of the trip. We climbed up three flights to the ship’s main deck, and I carefully poked my head out the door before I opened it all the way, convinced Emerson would have someone watching the exit for us.

But the hallway beyond was empty, and there were no places anyone could hide, so I pushed the door open the rest of the way and gratefully stepped out into the brightly lit corridor. “We should split up for a bit,” I said to Dani as we moved swiftly away from the employee door. “We need to lie low for the night, try to get Emerson off our backs. No doubt, he’ll be searching the ship for us.”

Dani shucked her beige vest and tossed it down a random corridor, then untucked her shirt and rolled up the sleeves so she wouldn’t look so much like an employee.
